Layer V cortical neuron

Layer V cortical neuron

Full reconstruction of a biocytin-microinjected neuron in the layer-V of the rat cortex. Layer-V cortical neurons collect information from most superficial layers of cortex and send axonal projections down to the striatum. To this end, their dendritic tree is highly polarised, and goes all the way up to the surface of the cortex through a big central neurite, which expands at distal levels. Image is a Z-projection of several hundreds of single confocal sections. Image by B. Chieng and J. Bertran-Gonzalez
