Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have a high prevalence of co-occurring problems related to inattention. Few studies have characterized cognitive functions in children with both disorders, as they are mutually exclusive in current diagnostic systems. Changes in revised systems motivated the present study to ask if performance on Conners` Continuous Performance test (CPT-II) is different in children with two compared to one of the disorders. Children (8-10 yrs) were recruited from the subsample of the Bergen Child Study taking part in a clinical examination including diagnostic interviews and CPT-II (n = 329). Four groups were included: children diagnosed with ASD+ADHD (n = 11), ASD no ADHD (n = 9), ADHD no ASD (n = 38), and a control group without the two disorders (n = 225). A 2x2 ANCOVA with IQ and age as covariates showed an interaction effect of ASD and ADHD on the measure of response style (F(1, 277)= 9.03, p = .003) and on the standard error measure of consistency as the time between the targets increased (F(1, 277) = 4.67, p = .032). A post-hoc contrast analysis using the ASD+ADHD group as reference showed significant higher scores than the control group on the CPT-index (p = .049) and a less cautious response style (p = .003), a higher intraindividual variability (p = .037) and a less consistent reaction-time as the time between the targets increase (p = .014) than the ASD group. The ADHD group was overall more impaired and the ASD group less impaired than the control group. The results indicate that the ASD+ADHD group is more similar to the ADHD than the ASD group, and emphasize the importance of including measures of attention when assessing children with both disorders.
